The teachers at Ray Pereira African Drumming are all experienced professional musicians who have studied extensively with Ray and with master drummers in Africa. Ray and his team are passionate about music, rhythms and sharing what they have learned from traditional masters and the music industry with you.
Kanchana is a master drummer in Sri Lankan drumming styles and has been playing African and Afro Cuban percussion for over 15 years. Kanchana has studied in West Africa and has a natural feel for the music.His roots in traditional Sri lankan drumming add to his approach to teaching traditional African rhythms. He has recorded and performed with Ash Grunwald and is currently working on the Afrolankan Drumming System with Ray.
Nii Otu Laryea (Abli). The newest member of the teaching team is recently arrived Ghanian master drummer Abli who has toured with several traditional bands from the Accra region of Ghana. Abli has been playing since he was a young boy and his traditional approach to teaching the rhythms of his birthplace adds depth to the teaching team at Ray Pereira African drumming.
Talia has studied with Ray in Australia and in Ghana with Nii Tettey Tetteh and several other master musicians. Talia has a good feel for the music and her engaging personality makes her one of Ray’s popular teachers. Talia is a music therapist who also teaches at schools. She is a professional musician who is also involved in several original recording and performance projects.
Jose is a professional percussionist who has played with The Dili allstars and is currently playing with Melbourne band Sol nation. Jose is a long term student of Ray’s and has studied the rhythms of Cuba and West Africa in depth. His easy going personality and gentle approach adds variety to the team.
Ray uses his extensive experience and depth of understanding to design the courses to suit all levels of players. He is able to explain how the rhythms work, the relationship between the parts being played and how to correctly listen to the music so that students understand what they are learning and playing. Ray’s extensive study of different styles of drumming has given him a unique ability to straddle cultural differences and to explain clearly to people from outside the culture how complex rhythms fit together.Ray and his teachers are able to demonstrate the nuances in the music that will make your lesson one of the highest quality.
